Three Student-Athletes Compete in NCAA Division III Championships
Three extraordinary student-athletes compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III Championships, representing the Principia Gold & Blue. Whatever the upcoming results, these Principians’ record-breaking seasons come to full fruition over the next few days.
Senior Daniel Gomez is competing now in the May 28–30 NCAA DIII tennis championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Daniel is one of only 32 singles qualifiers from across the country competing in the event. He is the first Principia men’s tennis player to qualify for nationals since two-time qualifier Ben Crandell (US’99, C’03) competed in the early 2000s. The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) recently named Daniel its Player of the Year for the second time in his collegiate career.
In track and field, two student-athletes have qualified for the NCAA 2020–2021 Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. Only the top 17 athletes in each event are invited to attend the DIII championships which started May 27 and continues through Saturday.
Junior long jumper Wisdom Thomas competes on Thursday, and we will provide updates. Wisdom broke the College record with a jump of 7.21 meters (23’8”) and is ranked 17 among the DIII long jumpers.
Senior Chris Puduski, the second-ranked DIII hammer thrower in the nation, is scheduled to compete this Saturday, May 29. Chris has been breaking College records since 2019. He set a new record at the Last Chance Meet on May 20 with a throw of 61.19 meters—that’s 200.75’!
