Enthusiasm Abounds for Summer Session 2015
“I was a first timer and definitely plan on returning next year. This program is outstanding!”
“Adventure, challenge, excitement, fun!”
“Summer Session is a ‘land cruise.’ I loved every bit of the entire two weeks.”
Encapsulating the spirit of lifelong learning (and doing), Principia’s 2015 Summer Sessioners were bubbling with enthusiasm during their time at the College in June. Most, though not all, participants stayed for both weeks and were full of praise for several new course offerings, ranging from trail walking to radio drama. Attendees couldn’t say enough about the teachers’ enthusiasm and knowledge.
Kelly Peticolas (C’90), director of Principia Lifelong Learning, had high praise for the students’ willingness to stretch themselves and try new things. “One of our new offerings this year was Tai Chi with Patrick McCreary (C’73),” she noted. “Students loved this class, even though it met every morning at 6:00 a.m.! Another popular new offering titled Hooked on Books, taught by Linda Conradi (C’65), explored one classic and one contemporary novel. Her class was so well received that we will be taking it on the road this year to share with Principia Clubs.”
Christian Science Monitor staff editor and food blogger Kendra Nordin taught History of American Cooking, while Principia’s executive chef Trey McCartt provided hands-on instruction in Cooking with the Chef. In another popular class, The Pathway of Music from Paris to Prague, Dr. Marie Jureit-Beamish explored European musicians and masterpieces with enthusiastic students, many of whom will continue their study of music in Paris, Prague, and Vienna next May on a sold-out Principia Lifelong Learning cruise.
Both first-time attendees and Summer Session regulars remarked on the fun of challenging themselves in the classroom and interacting with outstanding faculty. “Summer Session is intellectual entertainment,” said one repeat attendee. “Not only is it worthwhile to attend classes taught by well-educated people, but it’s engaging to be around other students who have an interest in learning.”
