Final Call for Submission of Memoirs about Military Service
Principians who served in the military during the Vietnam Era (whether in Vietnam or not) are invited to submit essays about their service for a collection of memoirs being compiled by members of the Principia College Classes of 1965 and 1966. The book’s working title is “Children of the ‘Greatest Generation’: A Collection of Memoirs.” Submissions are welcome from all Principians who served from the 1960s to 1975 (the Fall of Saigon).
The volume is intended to document Principians’ firsthand experiences in the military during the Vietnam era, from “sea stories” to GI experiences ranging from the everyday to the exceptional. Recollections of all types are welcome, including general interest essays that are touching, funny, extraordinary, ordinary but meaningful, or simply entertaining.
Robert M. Craig (US’62, C’66), PhD, will serve as the book’s editor, working with an advisory committee including Steve Wells (US’62, C’66) and Rod Carlson (C’65). Craig is professor emeritus of architecture at Georgia Tech and the former editor of a prominent academic journal. In addition, he recently served as Oxford University Press’s architecture editor for The Grove Encyclopedia of American Art and is author or co-author of six books in the field of architectural history, including Bernard Maybeck at Principia College: The Art and Craft of Building.
From 1968 to 1970, Craig served as a supply officer (including Vietnam service) aboard the USS Intrepid (CVS-11), an Essex-class aircraft carrier now docked at the 46th Street pier in New York City at the Sea, Air, and Space Museum.
We invite all Principians who served during the Vietnam era to submit written essays for consideration for this volume. Potential contributors who do not consider themselves writers are encouraged to draft their experiences and submit them, relying on the editor to suggest edits (on grammar, writing style, or content); all authors will have the opportunity to proof edited galleys.
No guarantees of inclusion nor warranty that the book will be published can be made. There is no fee to authors for submission nor honorarium to authors, editor, or advisory board. Any profit from the sale of the resulting book will be donated to Principia.
Review of proposals is underway, but contributions can still be accepted. Submissions should be forwarded electronically as Microsoft Word documents. If you are interested in contributing or would like more information, please e-mail Robert Craig immediately at rob.craig@arch.gatech.edu.
