Summertime Discovery Program Engages and Enriches
Messing about in the mud, catching toads, building an outdoor shelter, swimming, and more swimming . . . doesn’t that sound like an ideal summer for a child?
At Principia’s Summertime Discovery program, children are engaged in these activities and more. New program director April Anderson, who holds advanced degrees in both outdoor education and in marketing, characterizes the eight weeklong sessions as “enrichment” programs, rather than typical “day camp” activities. She is managing a team of student counselors who engage the children in activities and outdoor play, which she intersperses with indoor learning sessions.
Summertime Discovery is open to any 4- to 11-year-olds who regularly attend a Christian Science Sunday School and are in the St. Louis area, including those in town only temporarily (while visiting relatives, for example). A daily bus service is also available for children from the Alton/Elsah area. The program’s home base is in the Lower School, with a separate area for afternoon naps and quiet time for younger children.
The themes for the first five weeks (through June) are: Pebble Pals (geology), Nature Explorers (animals), Time Travelers (Native American culture), All About Arts, and So Many Sports. Each day includes both free and structured play, as well as enrichment activities that focus on the week’s topic. Weather and logistics permitting, Field Trip Fridays provide opportunities to extend the week’s learning and enjoyment in an off-campus setting. For example, after studying geology during the first week, campers and counselors spent a fascinating day exploring Mastodon State Park last Friday.
Children may attend for one to five full or half days per week. Learn more and register on Principia Marketplace.
