A New Look for School Students in the Fall
For many decades now, Principia School has had some sort of dress code, with requirements changing over the years and varying across School levels. In the early '70s, Upper School girls’ skirts couldn’t be more than a certain number of inches above the knee. More recently, polo shirts with Principia’s logo were de rigueur for upper and middle schoolers and, on certain days, for lower schoolers.
Beginning this fall, the School will move to a more uniform look (pun intended). Across all levels (with the exception of Preschool), students will wear uniform tops and bottoms, but that doesn’t mean everyone will look the same. Students can choose their tops and bottoms from a predetermined set of styles and colors—all provided by a single supplier, Lands’ End.
Clearly, this switch to uniforms simplifies things—for students, parents, and administrators. But the rationale for the change has to do with education, not ease. Dean of Students Melanie Duffy explains it this way: “A uniform approach that is neat, clean, modest, and whole shifts the focus away from fashion and toward learning.”
As the photo above shows, students will be looking sharp this fall, topping off their uniforms with smiles.
