Principia Advances to SLIAC Soccer Championship
Principia College men’s soccer will host Westminster College in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) championship under the lights in Elsah tomorrow night, Friday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. Don’t miss it! If you can’t make the game in person, watch the SLIAC broadcast.
Principia advanced to the championship after a thrilling game against Webster University Wednesday night, which was decided in penalty kicks after a 0–0 deadlock during regulation and double overtime play. Senior Briggs Hurley calmly stepped to the stripe and knocked in the first penalty kick. Before long, sophomore David McCook scored the winning kick. Though the game is officially recorded as a tie, the 4-1 result of the penalty kicks earned Principia a spot in the championship on Friday. This marked the first time that Principia College men’s soccer has been in the playoffs since 2010.
Other teams are excelling this fall as well. Women’s volleyball competes in the SLIAC playoffs against #1 seed Westminster College at 2 p.m. at Westminster in Fulton, Missouri, on Saturday, November 4. If you’re in the area, come cheer the Panthers to victory, and if they win, plan to stay for the championship game at 7 p.m. This is the first time Principia volleyball has been in the conference playoffs since 2013.
In cross country, the top three male runners at the SLIAC finals were Principians—for the second year in a row! We are anticipating that at least three runners on the men’s team will advance to the NCAA Nationals, which take place November 18 on Principia's spectacular North Farm course.
College student-athletes aren’t focused narrowly on their own success, though. By serving in the community, the teams regularly help others achieve their full potential. A new initiative called “hybrid Wednesdays” sets time aside for teams to volunteer weekly at the local Boys & Girls Club in Alton and other service organizations.
Go, Panthers!
