Mediation Team Competes in Scotland
In early April, the Principia College mediation team made its third consecutive appearance at the International Law School Championship Mediation Tournament, held this year at the University of Strathclyde School of Law in Glasgow, Scotland.
The team narrowly missed the semifinal round, competing against law schools from around the world—Singapore, India, Russia, Lithuania, Turkey, Europe, and North America. Led by co-captain Connor Fiddler, a junior, it was the youngest team Principia has ever fielded at this tournament. “Sophomore Lorraine Marsh and new team members Sammy Keyes and Brittany Duke, both freshmen, competed in preliminary rounds alongside Connor and learned a great deal from going head-to-head with law school students,” says Dr. Jeffrey Steele, the team's coach. “Justin Duffy (C '16), former team captain and now Adjunct Assistant Coach, was indispensable in the preparation and training,” he adds. (Duffy, who works in the Legal Department at The Mother Church in Boston, traveled to Scotland with the team.)
Only two other undergraduate programs—from Boston University and the University of Dubuque—competed in Scotland. Placement at the Law School Championships is earned by winning first or second place at the International Intercollegiate Mediation Championships. Principia has a very strong record in that competition, having won first place in Team Advocacy for two years running (2014 and 2015) and second place in Team Mediation last year.
