Godspell—A Lively Message of Hope
Healing the deaf, preaching to the poor, teaching by parable—the story of Jesus came vividly to life in Davis Black Box Theatre last weekend when the Theatre and Dance Department, supported by the Music Department, presented the classic musical Godspell, based on the Gospel of Matthew.
Inspired by compelling stories from around the world, the director and cast sought to convey that dissension can be overcome. “We reconceived this musical to set it in 2022, portrayed as a dark time in our country’s future,” says Theatre Professor and Production Director Trish Brown. “Those who are not part of the privileged elite have been exiled from mainstream society. Into this world of exiles comes Jesus, an escaped prisoner from the world of privilege. Through his love and teaching, outcasts—and even a key member of the elite—learn to see themselves and others not by race, social class, or religious affiliation, but as beloved children of God.”
The stage and costume design were inspired by true stories from around the world about people who have nothing but castoffs and refuse, yet they still manage to make clothing, toys, musical instruments, and other life-affirming creations with what little they have. Theatre Professor Leah McFall’s costuming and set design, as well as Technical Director Megan Lovegren’s lighting design, helped bring the production to life in vivid, creative ways. Music Professor Joe Van Riper directed a pit orchestra.
Independent Recognition
Although the play is an ensemble piece, two actors received independent recognition due to the strength of their performances. Nik Peschke, who played Jesus, and Robby Butler, a member of the ensemble, were selected to audition for the Irene Ryan Scholarship, a significant national award. They will also prepare audition material to present at the regional festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in January.
