Spring Production Showcases Broadway at Its Best
First a book and then a movie in 1933, 42nd Street is a big, bold musical celebrating the stuff that dreams are made of. With its feel-good formula of talent and hard work, being in the right place at the right time, and—of course—love and romance, the musical was one of the biggest hits of the Depression era. Decades later, in the 1980s, it transferred very successfully to the Broadway stage (where it won the Tony award for Best Musical) and London’s West End (where it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical). In 2001, 42nd Street won another Tony—for Best Broadway Revival.
This is the first time the Upper School is producing 42nd Street—and it’s been all hands on deck since students returned in January. With a cast and stage crew of more than 30 members each, organizing rehearsals, set construction, and costumes (and the very welcome late-night snacks) has been a daunting task. But with support from many staff and parent volunteers, the performing arts faculty have gotten the show up and running with grace and good humor.
In addition to three performances (tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday) for Principia families and friends, there will be a special Friday matinee for local elementary and middle school students—part of the School’s outreach to the community.
