Summer Fun Starts Up Again at Summertime Discovery
After a brief hiatus for the month of July, Principia’s Summertime Discovery program has taken off again this week—in more ways than one!
Exploring the theme of Outer Space, the children have been designing rocket ships, robots, and jet packs out of recycled materials. They spent an energetic morning exploring the space-themed “Rocket Park” in nearby Maplewood, riding a kid-size lunar roving car and zipping down the nearly three story-high rocket slide. And they’re enjoying stories and tales about astronauts and exploration.
Next week, drawing inspiration from the Richard Scarry classics Busy, Busy Town and What Do People Do All Day?, students will bring in their bikes, trikes, and remote-control vehicles to create a playground roadway. They’ll set up a store, bakery, and post office, and they’ll visit the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Climatron, Children’s Garden, and “Nature in Your Neighborhood” exhibits.
The final week’s theme will be “Lights, Camera, Action!” as students play improvisational games, perform skits, dance, and sing. Plus, they’ll get to tour the fascinating costume and props room behind Ridgway Auditorium with dance teacher Sheila Alioto as their guide! A movie outing and treasure hunt are on the agenda, too.
All of these themed activities, under the guidance of director Debra Kuhn and her team of assistants, take place in addition to a host of “typical” summer fun—messing about in the mud, swimming, playing outdoors, and swimming some more.
Open to four- to 11-year-olds who regularly attend a Christian Science Sunday School, the program has welcomed back several eager participants and expects more next week, as families return to town from vacation and camp. Children in town only temporarily (while visiting family or friends, for example) are welcome to join in the fun, too.
Children may attend one to five full or half days per week. Learn more and register on Principia Marketplace.
