Women’s Tennis Wins Conference
The women’s tennis team had a tremendous season this year, culminating in their winning the 2013 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament Championship. Coach Shannon Carney led Principia to its second conference tournament title in three years with the squad finishing 6–0 in conference play and 12–4 overall.
Carlie Sanderude (C’14) was named SLIAC Player of the Year after posting an undefeated record of 6–0 in SLIAC play. Shannon Carney was named the SLIAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year. SLIAC also recognizes one individual from each team, selected by the coach and teammates, who best displays the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the season. Sarah Corbitt (C’13) represented Principia on this year’s All-Sportsmanship team.
“The team worked with the metaphysical theme ‘Be still, and know that I am God [from Psalm 46],’” Coach Carney explained. “We strive to express God on the tennis court, emphasizing quickness, intuition, and inspiration, while removing fear and judgment. We also work to honor the game of tennis, bringing out the best in ourselves and our opponents.”
The team will take to the courts in the fall for a five-week season, participating in the USTA Small College Regional Tournament. Anticipating a return to championship form, Coach Carney had this to say: “Our returning players have excellent experience under their belt, and we look forward to welcoming freshmen who seek to make an immediate contribution to the team.”
