Wanted: Vietnam-Era Military Stories
In anticipation of their 50th Reunion in 2016, members of the Principia College Class of 1966, along with members of the College Class of 1965, are planning to publish a small book on the military experiences of Principians from the 1960s to 1975 (the Fall of Saigon), including general interest essays both inspirational and humorous. The working title of the book is “Children of the ‘Greatest Generation’: A Collection of Memoirs.”
The volume is intended to document Principians’ firsthand experiences in the military during the Vietnam era, from “sea stories” to GI experiences ranging from the everyday to the exceptional. Recollections of all sorts—touching, funny, extraordinary, ordinary but meaningful, or simply entertaining—are welcome.
Robert M. Craig (US’62, C’66), PhD, will serve as editor, working with an advisory committee including Steve Wells (US’62, C’66), Peter Van Vleck (US’61, C’65), and Rod Carlson (C’65). Craig is professor emeritus of architecture at Georgia Tech and the author of Bernard Maybeck at Principia College: The Art and Craft of Building, as well as several other books. From 1968 to 1970 Craig served as a supply officer (including Vietnam service) aboard the USS Intrepid (CVS-11), an Essex-class aircraft carrier now docked at the 46th Street pier in New York City at the Sea, Air, and Space Museum.
All Principians who served during the Vietnam era are invited to submit written essays for consideration for this volume.
Potential contributors who do not consider themselves writers are encouraged to draft their experiences and submit them, relying on the editor to suggest edits; all authors will have the opportunity to proof edited galleys. No guarantees of inclusion nor warranty that the book will be published can be made. There is no fee to authors for submission nor honorarium to authors, editor, or advisory board. Any profit from the sale of the book will be donated to Principia.
Submissions should be forwarded electronically as Microsoft Word documents to rob.craig@arch.gatech.edu to arrive by
