2013 Lincoln Academy Laureate Announced
Each year, Principia College nominates one senior for the statewide Lincoln Academy Laureate Award based on overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. This year’s recipient is Haley Morton (also US’10). Selected from colleges and universities across Illinois, the Laureates took part in a gathering at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, last weekend.
"Being selected as the Lincoln Academy Laureate was a testament to the help and support I’ve received from my Principia professors over the past few years,” says Haley, a history and political science double major. “I had a wonderful time interacting with seniors from other Illinois colleges and universities during the ceremony, but my favorite part about the entire day was being accompanied by my supportive parents and being reminded of how much I’ve learned and grown over my four years here at Principia."
A sports enthusiast, Haley ran on the cross-country team all four years. She also teaches horseback riding during the summers and, whenever possible, leads backcountry trips—her all-time favorite activity. Haley currently works as a writing tutor on campus, along with doing quite a bit of writing herself for classes and law school applications. She is researching Title IX for her senior capstone presentation, which she’ll give in the spring.
Along with attending law school, Haley plans to stay involved with athletics, noting, “I’d love to continue supporting the Women’s Sports Foundation,” which works to improve the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity.
