Cardboard Canoe Regatta Sets Sail
During Saturday morning of Homecoming Weekend, students once again launched seaworthy vessels made only from cardboard, tape, and colorful, water-based paint upon the mighty Mississippi River for the 7th annual Cardboard Canoe Regatta.
Some boats completed the entire course, while others sank fairly quickly into Piasa Harbor. Students taking a three-dimensional design class took the design and construction process to a new level, capturing the award for Most Attractive Boat. By all accounts the race did not fail to entertain!
“While making the boat, I mostly let it come together naturally as I worked,” says freshman Winnie Robinson, who won first place. “The most important part of the design was to build the boat fairly wide so it wouldn't flip. I honestly didn't care if I won, I just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t get drenched. I was actually pretty surprised that I won.”
Here are the official results:
First Place Rowers Winnie Robinson and Taylor Miller (visitor); vessel designed with Franck Tshieja and Zach Matthiesen
Second Place Rowers Preston Voges and Bjorn Mathisen; vessel designed with MoonHee Kwon
Third Place Rowers and designers Garrett Fielding and Kenneth Stack
Most Attractive Boat Rowers Aaron Dokodzo and Diego John; vessel designed with Clarice Bruch and Andy Christianson
