Hiking Hadrian's Wall
Enjoy a coast-to-coast walking tour across northern England with Chuck Wilcoxen, Principia College’s assistant athletic director. This well-traveled, 84-mile National Trail stretching the length of Hadrian’s Wall traverses some of the most beautiful countryside in England, from rolling fields to rugged moorland. Visit Roman forts, museums, quaint villages, and historic cities, stopping for tea with the locals along the way and a warm bed and tasty meal at trail’s end each day.
Among the trip’s highlights are a wide range of landscapes, including pastoral parkland, craggy hills, rugged moorlands, and salt marshes; the City of Newcastle, known for its “Blinking Eye” Millennium Bridge, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and distinctive Sage Gateshead building; and an overnight in Carlisle, with time to explore this historic city.
Geared toward active hikers, the average daily hiking distance is 13 miles over a combination of flat stretches and steep inclines. Buses are available for those wanting a break from hiking. The trip runs from July 10 to July 19, 2015, and the cost begins at $2,600/person for a shared room. This covers all accommodations, breakfasts, lunches, and admission to the excursions and activities included in the itinerary. Luggage transfer between hotels is also included.
